Promoting Outdoor Play

Nothing is better for children then creative playtime. By making different play areas in your yard, you can help to accomplish this. This allows you kids to use their imaginations and to burn off a ton of energy. A large swing set is a great way to encourage this. I personally recommend the wooden ones over the metal ones because they are considerably bigger and much more sturdy then the small metal ones they sell in the stores. You can purchase the wood sets in big box stores or you can purchase kits and plans online like you can at Playset Junction.

You can further invite free play and imagination by building a playhouse or fort. These are great because your children will spend hours playing game after game in their own play area. There are a wide range of styles you can choose from ranging from very intricate to pretty basic. You can also find a number of books on making playhouses.

Children also love teeter-totters. Kids will play on these things for hours literally. One really neat teeter-totter is the Lifetime Ace Flyer. This totter has to be seen to really understand. Think about your traditional teeter-totter. Then take a plane and put it in the center of it for the children to ride on. The children then sit on the wings to create the motion. This totter can support up to 600 lbs at a time and hold seven children.

Other favorites include wading pools, sandboxes, and anything else that gets you kids outside and moving. You can easily find plenty of things to fit in your yard no matter how large or small it is.
