“The Grapes of Wrath” was published in 1939 – at the tail end of The Great Depression – and it quickly became the definitive book about that era, capturing within one book everything that particular era meant.

The book follows a poor sharecropper family whose farm in Oklahoma is wiped out by the Dust Bowl, and like so many others from that part of the country, this family headed to California to seek their fortune in what was rumored to be a lush paradise. Just as many people found in real life during that time, however, the family in Steinbeck’s story found that California was nothing like the stories that had been told; instead, it was full of poor, starving families just like them – families desperate for work of any kind – and the land owners in California were all too willing to offer the lowest pay imaginable, and to watch these poor, starving families fight for the job.

While some people maintain that “nothing really happens” in ”The Grapes of Wrath,” many others have read it and felt the opposite – have in fact felt that the book encompasses everything that happened during that time.
